What to Do If You Break a Tooth on the Weekend

closeup young woman with toothacheEmergencies never seem to happen at convenient times. The weekend is the worst time to break a tooth, since few dental clinics are open. Your oral health, however, doesn’t have to wait.

There are a few simple steps you can take to care for your tooth before you’re able to come see us for treatment.

How to Preserve a Portion of Tooth

Of course, the most important action you can take is to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. We offer limited Saturday hours and will schedule you same-day whenever we can.

In the meantime, your first reaction should be to save any portion of a tooth that has come off. You may have heard that you should put your tooth in a glass of milk and bring it to us that way. We recommend this approach for bigger chunks that have come off. Another option is to pick up a basic saline solution from the pharmacy to safely store a small piece that came off.

Managing Pain and Oral Hygiene

It’s okay to continue with your regular brushing routine as long as it isn’t causing too much pain. For minor sensitivity, consider using Sensodyne® instead of your usual toothpaste.

If the pain is unbearable, it’s likely that the injury was more significant, and a nerve is now exposed. We consider severe pain and infections emergencies. Don’t put off your appointment, as our team of experienced dentists would love to help you find relief immediately.

We Can Help You Recover Your Smile

No matter how bad it looks at first, you don’t need to panic. We’ve helped countless patients get their smile back after injuries and accidents, and we’d love to help you, too. Reach out to our team today so we can start undoing the damage and help you start smiling your brightest again.
